The “secret” is that there is no secret. There is only the willingness and unwillingness to doing what it takes to get what we want.

Luckily, for those who have the drive and willingness there are easy-to-learn strategies to boost performance – and one used by professional athletes and top performers in a variety of fields is detailed in this short article.

Have you ever gone shopping for something and thought: ‘wow, that’s a nice X… I’ve never seen one like it before’ only to start seeing that same item everywhere after leaving that store? Oh look there’s that dress… look, there’s that car… hey, there’s that brand again…

Our Reticular Activating System (RAS) is in charge of our awareness, and though most times it’s acting without our conscious control we can learn to harness its powerful benefits.

It all goes back to the principle of focus and the fact that what we keep in front of mind is the reality we create for ourselves. If 90% of the time we’re thinking about the troubles and frustrations of every day, we’ll only get more of those frustrations and troubles. So let’s change!

Since daily circumstances of life sometimes make it easier to think about and focus on the negative, we must counter this natural inclination by opening our RAS receptors to the best things we’d like to get in life. Here’s how in 3 EASY steps:

STEP 1: Imagine what it will be like…

Put yourself in that ideal future right now, having already achieved what you want, received the praise, the reward, the gifts of having put in the effort and gotten to where you are.

Get a clear representation of what and who you are after getting what you want and make sure you look around and see if that is in-fact what you want… it’s better to make adjustments now!

Being in that new vantage point of having achieved what you want, allow yourself to step into that “self” in as much detail as possible, connecting to all your senses… meaning: seeing what you see, hearing the sounds of being in that moment and feeling the emotions and even body sensations of being at that ideal future moment in your life.

Lastly, take a look back from that vantage point and notice the steps you had the courage to take and the obstacles you overcame to get there. Pat yourself on the back for going for it fully. Connect with this new you as deeply as you can now.

STEP 2: Create your RAS receptor reminders…

Now that you’ve connected with who you want to be in that ideal future, think about a few key words or simple phrases that can easily remind you of those objectives and goals you’ve set for yourself.

Take a blank business card vertically or a small piece of paper you can fit in your pocket or wallet without disturbing and write those key words or phrases on it.

Do you have a smartphone? (dumb question…)

Grab it now and take as good a photo as you can of the card you just wrote and set it as your phone’s wallpaper so that it flashes on every time you first look at your phone. Take a moment to do this now, only if you truly want results.

Put the paper in your pocket or wallet and forget about it for now…

STEP 3: Become aware of your card at least once a day

Every night when going to bed… when you pull things out of your pockets or set aside your wallet for the night, just spend a moment being aware of what you wrote and those objectives you’re after. Then go to sleep.

In the morning, put the paper or wallet back in your pocket and stop thinking about it until it’s time to pull it out before going to bed. Of course, repeat this process.

Remember that your card and goals are meant to be actively adjusted so you’re in charge of making changes and being responsible for your own results.

RESULTS: What will you notice from this practice…?

Just like becoming aware of that item at the store that you’d never seen before, now your receptors are primed and ready for anything that looks like an opportunity that moves you closer to your goals.

Because your goals are now more present in your daily life, your unconscious will take the hint and help you help yourself more readily.

For example, in the moment of making a decision about wasting time or doing something productive that will take you closer to where you want, your productive part will be more focused than ever on achieving what you want and ideally help you make the right decision.
